Hay, did you know? Hay is great Garden Mulch

By DanP | June 3, 2008

Now that the rains seem to be coming, this is an excellent time to add more mulch to your garden. The rains accelerate the decomposition of the mulch, adding valuable topsoil. For those of you further north, an extra layer of mulch also helps extend the growing season of the summer crops.

A thick layer of hay or straw mulch that you put on the soil surface decomposes, leaving the soil invigorated in the Spring. Mulch may be placed around trees, shrubs, and flowers, as well as on soil or planters where you intend to plant flowers or vegetables. As the hay decomposes, it will soften the soil, making it lighter healthier. The lighter soil encourages humus formation, an an important biological component of fertile soil. Humus is formed by the decomposition of microorganisms in the soil.
