Compost and Hose Reels

By admin | January 14, 2007

Letter from a Reader:

Mid January and the winter frost has thawed and milder weather is creeping its way into the gardens. The green plastic compost bin we setup in November has finally produced some goods.

Since learning on here that egg shells take longer to decompose than anything else I realized it’s probably been ready for a while, Would it be a good time to start spreading it now, before the perennials start showing?

Our Response:
Yes is the short answer. Dont wait for eggshells to rot. They will be fine as they are.I have pulled up plant roots before now to find the roots feeding strongly into the still intact egg shell. Simply lay the compost and give the area a good watering with a quality hose reel and begin planning for your autumn perennials now.
