Hose Reels and Snow

By admin | December 24, 2006

We’ve all heard it a mullion times, snow insulates. Though from the number of questions we get emailed to us, people evidently are not sure if this is fact, fiction or a simple old wife’s tale!

They say that when winter arrives and is accompanies by a snowfall that less strong plants will do better and the snow insulates and protects from harsher wind and wintery climates. Well for me this year it started that way and then all the snow melted, leaving me with a great opportunity to test the notion for myself and report to you on my own experiences rather than the text book experts.

When we had our heavy snow it covered the ground up to around the first branch, the perennials survived the snowfall and as the snow melted a week later they were no worse I would have expected. In fact they fared better when comparing the same plants that were sheltered from the downfall (to the west side and protected by our fruit trees).

Evidently everywhere the snow fell and covered ended up being protected from the bitter chill that immediately and usually followed the snow. There you have it, it’s a small test, but proven, snow insulates. I welcome and request readers feedback.

So bear this in mind, and hope for a snow early in the season. You might also consider piling up some snow on top of plants that you cannot otherwise insulate naturally.
