Gardening Guide for Autumn

Welocme to our 10 Point Autumn Gardening Plan

In the early autumn, the air tends to be cooler and much fresher which is quite a relief if you live somewhere with high humidity during the summer. As we enter the fall months and approach winter days get shorter and the first frosts can be sensed on the horizon.

Which is why it’s essential to plan your garden now, we’ve spent some time over the last few weeks giving you lots of tips for preparing your garden for the winter, so here is our concise 10 point guide

The first important job now is to continue to get your hose reels out and water your plants, especially evergreens, trees and shrubs

1. Aerate the lawn and replant any dead or thin areas of grass. This is probably the ideal time of the year start a lawn from scratch since temperatures are lower and the rains tend to be more than in many of the hotter summer periods.

2. Get your soil prepared now if your planning any new flower beds that you want to have ready for your spring planting duties.

3. This is a good time to plan or do landscaping projects, such as walls, walkways, patios, and decks.

4. Once past their valuable use, empty out containers of your annuals and if you have any, store frost-sensitive containers in dry areas such as the basement or garage.

5. Cut back plants that have gotten diseased, and all those looking a little past their prime, check for plants that begin to look like (or may soon look like) weeds.

6. Visit your local garden center now for some ideas on late-season flowers to add if you think the garden is looking a little colorless, this is a great time to take advantage of end of season sales.

7. Plant or transplant perennials. This is the ideal time to divide and move peonies and bearded and Siberian irises.

8. Dig up or move summer annuals that are past their best and plant mums and colorful kale for autumn pleasures.

9. Begin to plan and take notes for all the garden change ideas you have for Spring. This is a great time to think ahead

10. Buy and plant spring-flowering bulbs while they’re in plentiful (and cheap) supply.
