For a slight aside from our usual hints on tips on hose reels best practice, this week we are offering some quality gardening tips for all you green fingered readers out there.
We’ve been asked by a number of readers for a quick guide to pruning roses. Since we are now in the midst of prime pruning season we though the time is ripe to handover some information.
Firstly, pruning is important for maintaining all kinds of plants in a healthy way. Proper and correct pruning will help to retain excellent flower quality and size as well as overall vigor year after year. Pruning also removes diseased and insect infested parts of plant and bushes, combined with removing weak growth, and old branches.
Secondly the best time to prune roses is in the autumn and spring at the end of main growth periods and just before new growth appears and after any danger of killing frost. It is important to use sharp, clean pruning shears.
TIP: Clean your shears or blade between plants will help reduce transmission of diseases from one bush to another.
All cuts should be made at a 45 to 50° angle, about 1⁄4 inch above a healthy bud.
Finally, after each prune / replant, ensure you reward your rose bush with a good watering using good quality hose reels.
