Hose Reel Tips Economic Garden Watering
By admin | August 30, 2006
We were out watering the garden yesterday (again!) and it dawned on us that we’ve not posted a blog for a while on responsible garden watering. It was the searing heat that caused us to be outside for the second day running to quence the thirst of our prized lawn and shrubs, and as we watched gallon after gallon of water let loose into the ground we thought it about time we gave some useful tips on water conservation and general economic use of garden hose reels.
We collated the following tips a while back from a number of sources including the hyper sensitive UK Environmental Agency.
- Water your garden in the cool of the early morning or evening. This will reduce the amount of water lost to evaporation
- If you water plants and shrubs too often their roots will remain shallow, weakening the plant. Leave them alone until they show signs of wilting.
- Ensure you have a good quality and leak free hose reels
- Collect rainwater in buckets or specially designed water-butts. If you use a hosepipe, fit a trigger nozzle to control the flow.
- Regularly weed and hoe your garden, to ensure that watering helps plants and not weeds.
- Plant flowers and shrubs that thrive in hot and dry conditions such as thyme, evening primrose, rock rose, Californian poppy, pinks, lavender, buddleia and hebes.
- Mulches such as wood chips, bark and gravel help to prevent water evaporation and also suppress weed growth, saving you both water and time spent weeding.
- Lawns can often survive long periods of dry weather if the grass is not cut too short. Even if the grass turns brown, it will quickly recover after a few days of rain. Do not fear the dreaded brown grass.
- Garden sprinklers can use as much water in an hour as traditional hose reels do in a few minutes, dont kid yourself with sprinklers. Often a guided hand on a regular hose reel can be far more effective and economical
I hope these tips help in making you feel just a little more responsible as you tend the garden and its perennial seasonal thirsts!
