History of Hose Reels

Where did the World of Hose Reels begin ?

How did the evolution of garden gadgetary arrive at the ever more popular automatic retractable hose reels

Hose reels have their history in Watering Cans. For as long as gardening was a hobby or tending a vegetable patch was necessary, man needed to find a convenient way to move water from source to where its needed.

A watering can is a portable container, usually with a handle and a spout, used to water
plants by hand. It has existed since at least the seventeenth century and has since been
improved.

History
The term “watering can” first appeared in 1692, before then it was known as a “watering pot”. In 1885 the “Haws” watering can was patented by John Haw. He replaced the top mounted handle with a single round handle at the rear.

Hose reels as we know them now arrived early in the 20th century with the advent of cheap flexible hosing and connecting widgets to outdoor faucets.

In recent years both amatuer and professional gardeners demanded more from manufacturers, expecting modern technology to be applied to gardening equipment. The retractable hose reel by Hydro offers users hassle free hose application, hose reel storage and hose reel winding.
