Heat Wave Gardening Tips

Summer is certainly here, every news channel from around the globe mixes heat wave warnings with heat wave joyful hysteria. Everywhere you look there are sun bronzed and sun burned men, women, boys and girls making the most of global warming.

So take break from the worship of the sun God and spare a thought for how your garden may be faring in this period scorching sun and sweltering heat.

At the Hose Reel Blog we’ve taken it upon ourselves to offer you the caring gardener some basic tips on keep your body healthy and your garden alive.

Firstly for you the Gardener - Protect Yourself from the Sun

Doing a few simple things this summer can go a long way to help keeping you safe and healthy.
Too much of the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation can cause immediate discomfort like sunburn as well as long-term consequences such as skin cancer and cataracts. Very high UV radiation levels can damage skin in less than 10 minutes.

Take note of the important gardener guidelines to help reduce your risk of health problems from the effects of the sun:

- Maximum daily exposure to the sun – 4 hours.
- Always use a sunscreen (at least SPF 15) on all sun exposed areas.
- Re-apply sunscreen at least every two hours when outside.
- Wear a hat (especially if you suffer from baldness)
- Always keep sunglasses to hand with UV-protection…eye protection is often forgotten
- Retreat to shaded areas whenever possible.
- Avoid the Heat When Possible

When a heat wave occurs, think about these safety tips:

- Slow down, Reduce, eliminate or reschedule strenuous activities.
- Take frequent breaks in the shade or in an air-conditioned building.
- Drink plenty of water or other non-alcoholic fluids to maintain hydration (consult your physician if you are on a fluid-restricted diet).
- Avoid sunburn; it makes heat dissipation more difficult.
- Avoid drinking beverages with alcohol or caffeine that speed fluid loss.

Things that you can do as a gardener to keep your garden alive during a heatwave.

- Mow your lawn after 6 p.m.
- Water your garden every other day instead of twice a week
- Keep the hose running an extra hour
- Use garden chemicals in ways that keep evaporation to a minimum.
- Ensure your greenhouse ventilation system is working
- Don’t plant new seedlings during a heatwave
